WhatsApp API guide · Part 5 of 12. New here? Start with Part 1: Get your API key.

People reply faster when they can just tap. WhatsApp gives you three kinds of tap-friendly messages, and you can send all of them with the E-Public Touch API:

  • Reply buttons: up to 3 quick answers, like Yes / Call me / Not now.
  • List menu: one button that opens a list of up to 10 choices.
  • Website button: one button that opens a link.

Want a photo of your offer on top, with buttons under it? Use the Poster with buttons page. It is explained at the end of this part.

Reply buttons

A message with three reply buttons on the customer's phone
The customer sees up to three buttons under your message.
The customer tapped Yes, book it and the reply appears in the chat
One tap, and the answer comes back to you.

In the API Tester, open More message types in the left menu and click Reply buttons. Type the customer's number and your Message, then type the button names under Buttons. Click Add button for a third one. Before you press Send now, check the phone on the right: How it looks on the phone shows your text with the buttons under it. The link looks like this:

...&type=buttons
&message=Hi Priya, would you like to visit our showroom this Sunday?
&buttons=Yes, book it|Call me first|Not now
&header=Site visit
&footer=Reply with one tap
  • 1 to 3 buttons, separated by |. Each button name can have up to 20 characters.
  • header (a bold line on top) and footer (small grey text) are optional, up to 60 characters each. In the tester: Top of the message → Bold line, and Small text at the bottom.
  • Want a photo, video or PDF on top instead of a bold line? Add media_url=https://yoursite.com/photo.jpg. In the tester, pick it in Top of the message (None, Bold line, Photo, Video or PDF), then click Upload photo or paste a link. Photo + text + small text + 3 buttons is still one message.
The Reply buttons page of the API Tester: Message, two buttons, Top of the message set to Photo and Small text at the bottom on the left, and the phone preview with the photo, text and two buttons on the right
Add or remove buttons with one click. The phone preview shows the message as the customer will see it.

List menu

A list menu message with a See options button
The message shows one button.
The opened list with four product choices
Tapping it opens your list. The customer picks one and taps Send.

In the tester: More message types → List menu. In a link:

...&type=list
&message=What are you looking for today? Tap the button below and choose.
&list=LED TV::Smart TVs from 32 to 65 inch|Air conditioner::Split and window ACs|Refrigerator|Washing machine
&list_button=See options
&list_title=Products
&header=Our products
  • Up to 10 rows, separated by |. Each row has a title (up to 24 characters).
  • Add a small description after ::, like LED TV::Smart TVs from 32 to 65 inch (up to 72 characters).
  • list_button is the button text (default "Choose"). list_title is the heading inside the list (default "Options").
  • In the tester the boxes are called Menu choices (click Add choice for more), Menu button text, Bold line on top, Small text at the bottom and, under Extra settings (optional), Menu heading.

Website button

A message with a View ACs website button
A neat button instead of a long link in the text.

In the tester: More message types → Website button. In a link:

...&type=link
&message=See all split and window ACs with prices and EMI options.
&url=https://yoursite.com/ac
&button_text=View ACs
&header=AC collection 2026

The button text can have up to 20 characters. If you leave it out, it says "Open". In the tester, type the web address in Button link and the words in Button text.

Poster with buttons: a photo with something to tap

Want to send your Diwali offer poster with buttons under it? In the left menu, under Send a message, click Poster with buttons. One page does it all:

  1. Type the customer's number in Send to (WhatsApp number).
  2. Poster: click Upload photo / video / PDF, or paste a link. The page tells you how it will go, for example We send it as a photo.
  3. Your text: the main text of your message.
  4. Small text at the bottom (optional): a short grey line, like your shop name.
  5. What can the customer tap? Choose one: Reply buttons, Website link, WhatsApp call, Form or Nothing.
  6. Fill the boxes of your choice (for Reply buttons: up to 3 button names).
  7. Check How it looks on the phone on the right: the poster, your text, the small line and the buttons. Then click Send now.
The Poster with buttons page: Poster, Your text, Small text at the bottom, the five choices under What can the customer tap? and three reply buttons on the left, and the phone preview of the poster with three buttons on the right
Poster, text, a small line at the bottom and three reply buttons. The page builds the right link for you.
One kind of tap per message. WhatsApp allows reply buttons, or a website link, or a WhatsApp call button, or a form button — never two kinds in one normal message. With WhatsApp call or Form, the poster goes first and the button comes as a second message a second or two later. The page does this for you.

Want everything together — reply buttons + a website link + a "Call now" button that dials your number + a form — on one poster? That is possible only in an approved Template. Make it once in your panel (Templates → Create New Template), get it approved, then send it from the Template page of the tester (Part 3).

Where do the answers go?

  • Every tap shows up in your Live Chat, like a normal customer message.
  • You can see them in the tester too. Open Customer replies (under Check & read) and press Show customer replies. A tap shows as Tapped button: Yes, with a Reply button that opens the Text page with that customer's number filled in.
  • Your apps can read them with get/wa.received (Part 7). Each tap comes with a reply_id, so your software knows which button was pressed.
  • Want your own codes? Add button_ids=yes|call|no (in the tester: Extra settings (optional) → Button codes (for your software)). The reply then comes back as eptapi_yes, eptapi_call or eptapi_no.
  • Taps on API buttons do not start your chatbot or Flow Maker. This is on purpose, so your bot does not jump into a conversation your app started.
A customer reply in the API Tester: From 919876543210 Rahul Sharma, Tapped button: Yes, and a Reply button
A button tap in Customer replies: you see which button was tapped. Reply opens the Text page for this customer.
24-hour rule: buttons, lists, website buttons and posters are normal messages, so they need an open 24-hour window. To start a new conversation with buttons, create a template with quick-reply buttons and send it as a template (Part 3).

What next?

Part 6 shows five more useful types: your shop location, a contact card, a WhatsApp call button, a request for the customer's location and a WhatsApp form.
